• HIFIMAN Arya WiFi Full-Size — biggest strength: a genuine all-in-one wireless system with built-in Wi-Fi streaming, an onboard HYMALAYA Mini DAC, and a planar magnetic driver. No amp, no DAC, no dongle required.
• HIFIMAN Arya WiFi Full-Size — biggest trade-off: it's open-back (so it leaks and lets the room in), it weighs 452 g, and Wi-Fi mode only runs 6.5–7.5 hours per charge.
• Fostex TH‑900MK2 — biggest strength: a 50mm BioDyna dynamic driver with a 1.5 Tesla magnetic circuit inside sealed Urushi-lacquered cherry birch cups — impactful, isolating, and beautifully finished.
• Fostex TH‑900MK2 — biggest trade-off: it's wired only. You'll need your own source, DAC and amp, and there's no battery, no streaming and no wireless convenience at all.
• Who each pick is for: the Arya WiFi for the listener who wants one cable-free box that streams lossless audio; the TH‑900MK2 for the listener with a proper desktop chain who wants a closed-back flagship they'll keep for years.
The Arya WiFi Full-Size is unusual in a good way: it's a planar magnetic over-ear with the source built in. HIFIMAN's own SERENADE Wi-Fi streaming media system and a self-developed HYMALAYA Mini DAC live inside the headphone, so the signal path is headphone-to-router, not headphone-to-amp-to-DAC-to-computer. That's the whole pitch, and it's a real one.
The reason HIFIMAN leans on Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth is spelled out plainly in the spec sheet: Bluetooth's transmission bandwidth is comparable to MP3 and can't carry high-definition streaming, while Wi-Fi can pass high-bitrate, high-resolution lossless audio and works with most online music platforms. If you've ever noticed that a wireless headphone sounds thinner than the same track wired, that bandwidth gap is usually why.
Buy it if you want a single wireless system that streams lossless audio with no extra gear. Skip it if you need isolation, long untethered runtime, or you already own a desktop DAC/amp you love and would rather just plug in. Also note the mode trade-off: about 6.5–7.5 hours over Wi-Fi, but 23 hours over Bluetooth, with a 3–4 hour charge (the battery field lists 2 hours) and over 30 days standby. The 1-year manufacturer warranty is worth factoring in.
Fostex TH‑900MK2: Who It's For
The TH‑900MK2 is the opposite philosophy: no battery, no radio, no app — just a wired closed-back headphone built around a 50mm BioDyna dynamic driver and a 1.5 Tesla neodymium magnetic circuit. The BioDyna diaphragm uses bio-cellulose fiber, and Fostex tunes it for rich sub-bass, natural mids and clear, extended highs. The high Tesla figure is the headline: it's what gives this kind of driver its grip and dynamic punch.
The build is the other half of the story. The ear cups are Japanese cherry birch finished in traditional Urushi lacquer, hand-finished, which means each pair looks slightly different and the wood also contributes to the acoustic behavior. Enclosure material is listed as wood, and the cups are circumaural (fully around the ear), which combined with the sealed back gives you passive noise cancellation — no electronics, just a physical barrier between you and the room.
The cable is detachable and made from 7N (99.99999%) oxygen-free copper, so you can swap to a balanced setup later without replacing the headphone. That's a genuine long-term upgrade path.
Buy it if you listen at a desk or in a quiet room, want isolation without active noise cancelling, and already have (or plan to build) a proper source chain. Skip it if you want wireless freedom, built-in streaming, or a headphone you can wear while walking around the house. It also has no inline controls and no microphone — this is a pure listening tool. Warranty is 1 year parts and labour.
• Best for wireless lossless streaming → HIFIMAN Arya WiFi Full-Size. Built-in Wi-Fi streaming plus an onboard DAC means no external gear.
• Best for isolation and quiet-room focus → Fostex TH‑900MK2. Sealed closed-back cups with passive noise cancellation.
• Best for bass impact and dynamic punch → Fostex TH‑900MK2. 50mm BioDyna driver on a 1.5 Tesla magnetic circuit.
• Best for long untethered sessions → HIFIMAN Arya WiFi Full-Size in Bluetooth mode. Roughly 23 hours versus 6.5–7.5 hours in Wi-Fi mode.
• Best for open, airy presentation → HIFIMAN Arya WiFi Full-Size. Open-back planar design with an 8Hz–55kHz range.
• Best for cable upgrades and balanced rigs → Fostex TH‑900MK2. Detachable 7N oxygen-free copper cable.
• Best for travel and shared spaces → Fostex TH‑900MK2. It doesn't leak, and it doesn't need a router.
• Best for minimal-desk setups → HIFIMAN Arya WiFi Full-Size. One headphone replaces headphone, DAC and amp.
• Best for buyers who want to keep using an existing amp → Fostex TH‑900MK2. Wired Type-C/USB and analog-friendly chain, no batteries to age.
• Best for a hand-finished, heirloom look → Fostex TH‑900MK2. Urushi lacquer over cherry birch.
In my opinion, the Fostex TH‑900MK2 is the one I'd buy — but only if you already have, or intend to build, a proper source chain. The 1.5 Tesla BioDyna driver, the sealed wooden cups and the detachable 7N cable make it a headphone you keep and upgrade around, and the isolation means you can actually use it in a normal room.
That said, if the idea of a DAC and amp on your desk is the reason you keep putting off buying good headphones, get the HIFIMAN Arya WiFi Full-Size instead. It streams lossless over Wi-Fi, it has the DAC inside, and it removes every excuse. Two very different answers to the same question — pick the one that matches how you actually listen.
HIFIMAN's own spec sheet argues yes: Bluetooth bandwidth is comparable to MP3 and can't carry high-definition streaming, while Wi-Fi transmits high-bitrate, high-resolution lossless audio. That's a bandwidth argument, not a tuning one, but it's the core reason this headphone exists.
There's no amp, DAC or battery inside — it's a wired, passive headphone, so it needs a source with enough output. Plan on a desktop DAC/amp or a capable portable player, and note the detachable cable lets you move to a balanced setup later.
The Fostex TH‑900MK2. It's closed-back with passive noise cancellation and doesn't leak. The HIFIMAN Arya WiFi Full-Size is open-back, so it lets room noise in and lets your music out — great at a desk, poor on a train.
