Professor of Tohoku University, Japan
Hidemi Kato got his Ph.D. from Tohoku University in 1999. He became a full professor at Institute for Materials Research (IMR), Tohoku Univ. in 2015. From 2020 to 2023, he served as Deputy Director of IMR. His research field is metallurgy, and he has published extensively on the fundamentals and applications of metallic glasses, nanocrystalline alloys, and high-entropy alloys etc. In 2010, he discovered the dealloying phenomenon in liquid metals with a collaborator, which enabled the nano- and microporous formation of noble and half-metals, which had been difficult to achieve using conventional dealloying reactions in aqueous solutions. Currently, this research is expanding into fundamental and applied studies for energy device materials such as catalysts, battery active materials, and supports, as well as dissimilar material bonding between steel and magnesium or titanium alloys, where phase separation of the main components makes robust metallurgical bonding difficult.
