The wind must be 10mph or less at the time of and during the burn. The responsible party must decide, when the time comes, if the wind is favorable for burning or not and will be held responsible if the burn gets out of control.

  • A minimum of 24-hours notice may be required to issue a permit.
  • Open burning is only permitted for brush and natural vegetation.
  • No permits are issued for open burning on Sundays or Holidays.
  • Open burning is not permitted when winds are in excess of 10 MPH.


Brush Pile Permit: Applications submitted by Sunday, if approved, may be issued the following Tuesday at the Hickman Fire Station between 6:50 PM and 7:00 PM.

Land Management Permit: State statue requires completion of a Prescribed Burning Plan prior to any burning for Land Management purposes. Permits will be issued only after satisfactory review of the required Prescribed Burning Checklist. A PDF file of the checklist may be accessed at the following URL:

After completing the pre-burn portion of the checklist, applicant needs to schedule a meeting with an Officer to review the Prescribed Burning Plan. Appointments may be scheduled by calling the Fire Station at (402) 540-9408.
