The tradition of "Black Box Theatre" comes from the philosophy that theatre can be done anywhere - not just in an established auditorium or other theatre space.
Many professional theaters and universities have alternative, smaller rooms, typically painted entirely black, in which the set, lighting, and even the audience can be moved into different configurations. Rather than need multiple performance spaces, one space can serve as many.
"Black Box" theaters are typically smaller than large auditoriums, fitting a fraction of the audience. However, this means that each show performed within one creates a close dynamic between the audience and the performers. Actors typically cannot see the audience due to bright stage lighting, but now that the audience is very close by, their expressions and reactions can be seen.
Each "Black Box" show has the potential to be different from the next. Even each show within a run can be very different due to the way the cast might engage the audience. Patrons get to see the true range of theatre's possibilities.
