What are the changes from last year's state championships to this year's?
During the annual HIADA conference, it was adopted to create divisions for paddling. Division 1 and Division 2. This would allow more schools to participate in the state championships. Division 1 Girls, Boys, Mixed, and Division 2 Girls will have a 12-team format, and Division 2 Boys and Mixed will have an 8-team format.
What type of start will be used?
There will be a three (3) flag starting system used to start each race: one Yellow, one Red, and one Green.
In between races:
A Yellow flag will signify a five (5) minute warning to have teams check in promptly at the check-in tent.
During races:
A Yellow flag will signify that the race on the course will commence shortly. Followed by five (5) waves, in a side-to-side motion, followed by a Red. Followed by raising the Green flag - indicating the beginning of the race.
Post races:
Concluding each race, a Red or Green flag will be raised indicating the outcome of the race.
Red flag: indicates that a team/teams have committed an infraction during the race.
Green flag: indicates no infractions observed or committed during the race.
Why are there 15-minute intermissions before and after the mixed varsity events?
Schools may utilize a paddler twice; the intermissions allow the paddler racing multiple events to rest before competing in the next event.
i.e.: A paddler that has completed racing for their school for Girls Varsity - Heat 2 may be competing for their school in the Mixed Varsity - Heat 1.
