Compare

Identify the main factors that apply in two or more situations and explain the similarities and differences or advantages and disadvantages

Comparing words:

Showing similarity or adding a point: additionally, also, as well, even, furthermore, in addition, indeed, let alone, moreover, not only

Showing a difference or an opposite point of view: alternatively, anyway, but, by contrast, differs from, elsewhere, even so, however, in contrast, in fact, in other respects, in spite of this, in that respect, instead. nevertheless, on the contrary, on the other hand, rather, though, whereas, yet

Explain

You are required to give reasons how or why something is what it is. You could start by setting out in detail the meaning of something, with reasons. It is more difficult than describe or list, so it can help to give an example to show what you mean. Start by introducing the topic then give the ‘how’ or ‘why’.

Analyse

You are required to break down the question into different parts and the give an in-depth account which shows your understanding about each separate part. You can also Identify separate factors, say how they are related and how each one contributes to the topic.

Discuss

Write about a topic in detail, presenting an argument for and against, taking into account different ideas and opinions.

Level 2 Distinction

Assess

You are required to cover the different factors which are the most important or relevant. You are then required to give a conclusion by providing reasons why these are the most important or relevant. It also means to make a judgement on the importance of something – similar to evaluate.
