Personnel

Thoughts on Personnel

From Smith, ch 1-Introducing Human Resources Administration

"It is incumbent on principals to be much more specific about the qualities of the teachers they wish to hire." (pg 6)

"The wise principal would also develop a comprehensive program to assist teachers new to the profession throughout the entire school year or more." (pg 8)

From Smith, ch 3-Recruitment

"If you don't know what you are looking for, you won't know when you've found it." (pg 46)

Notes from class (LSA 5400, Dr. Gummerson)

If using an interview team, be clear about their role. They are advising, but the principal has the final choice

From Ubben, ch 9-Human Resources Development

"Although most educational leaders espouse a dedication to the enhancement of individual potential, organizational practices may, in fact, be counterproductive to the fullest development of its human resources." (pg 181)

Action Items

Develop, with the team for which the position will be on, a detailed list of what qualities and characteristics the optimal candidate should have. Consider what the team wants, but also what might be needed to fill in gaps on the team or balance something out.

Create playlists and pathways for different groups of teachers (brand new, district transfers, new to grade level/subject, etc)

Consider a "Who to Call" section of the employee handbook for common topics/situations.

Be sure the team knows what can and cannot be asked.

If I believe in the development of my staff, I need to put my money where my mouth is and allow them time to improve their craft with each other or outside opportunities.

Meet with each person on staff at a new location to build a relationship but also to give them the opportunity to tell you what their role is and how you can maximize their skills."What would the ideal functioning of your role look like?""What do you see the purpose of your role being?"-phrase this better, that might come off as them having to justify their position "What skills do you want me to be aware of?"
