An ambitious program, elevating minority high school students in Jefferson County, AL, beyond systemic confinement through multidisciplinary curriculum, mentorship, and leadership training that culminates in “Turned It Projects” — student-led, community-based initiatives addressing real-world issues.
“Who has spoken a vision bigger than the path they see for themselves into their ears. Who has made the mountain low and raised the valleys to shatter the doubts they may have in their heart!”
This is the heart of the Turner Fellowship — to speak that vision, to clear that path, and to ensure that students not only imagine life beyond Alabama, but are prepared to thrive there. With the Turner Fellowship, they won’t just graduate. They’ll emerge with a voice, a vision, and the power to turn the tides for generations to come.
We are hosting a 5K marathon to raise funds to support the launch of this program!
Tyler A. Turner is a senior at Johns Hopkins University, double majoring in Chemistry and Public Health. A first-generation student from Jefferson County, Alabama, he believes talent is universal—even when opportunity isn’t. From Birmingham classrooms to one of the world’s top universities, his journey has been shaped by mentorship and a drive to break generational barriers. As a researcher and scholar, Tyler founded Helping Educate Youth to open the doors he once had to knock down, building programs that challenge traditional academic narratives, shifting the tectonic plates of access and equity to reveal the brilliance of students who are too often overlooked.
