String Theory is in crisis mode... 2 november 2024
String theory predicts a vast number of potential phenomena, but none have yet been observed. The required energies to test string theory's predictions often exceed what current experiments can achieve, such as those conducted at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
String theory has a vast "landscape" of possible solutions, estimated to be around 10^500 different vacuum states. In the video, Leonard Susskind mentions that it is even more than 10^500. This multitude of solutions complicates the prediction of specific physical properties of our universe, as any observable quantity could depend on which vacuum state describes our universe.
Extra Dimensions: The theory requires additional spatial dimensions for mathematical consistency—typically 10 or 11 in superstring theory. However, these extra dimensions have not been observed, leading to questions about how they could be hidden from current experimental scrutiny. These dimesnions are also proposed to be curled up into Calabi Yau shapes.
The mathematics of string theory is highly complex, which poses challenges for making concrete predictions. Aspects like dualities and the intricate relationships between different string theories add layers of complexity that can be difficult to interpret physically.
Supersymmetry(SUSY) predicts that every known particle has a heavier partner, yet none have been found in experiments. The absence of these "superpartners" raises doubts about the validity of SUSY. While proponents argue that these particles could be heavier than the energy scales accessible to current experiments, critics suggest this reliance on unobservable particles may render SUSY unfalsifiable.
SUSY is often invoked to address problems like the hierarchy problem, which concerns the relative weakness of gravity compared to other fundamental forces. However, the required fine-tuning of the mass of superpartners to cancel out quantum corrections raises further concerns about the naturalness of the theory.
Critics point out that if superpartners are not found, theorists can simply assert that they exist but are too heavy to be detected. This creates a scenario where the theory can be adjusted to fit any outcome, challenging its scientific robustness.
In light of these interesting videos by Curt Jaimungal, I will double up on my studies of conspansive duality.
