Hermit crabs rely on shells for protection, humidity retention, and growth. As they grow, they need larger shells to move into, or they risk stress, injury, or even death. Providing a variety of properly sized natural shells is essential for their well-being.
Natural, Unpainted Shells – Always use natural shells without any paint or artificial coatings.
Open, Round Openings – Most land hermit crabs prefer shells with round or oval openings rather than narrow slits.
Variety of Sizes – Offer multiple sizes so your crab can choose the best fit.
Smooth Interior – The inside should be clean and smooth, without cracks or sharp edges.
Toxic Paint – Paint can chip off and be ingested, leading to poisoning.
Unnatural Material – Painted shells may be uncomfortable or unsafe for the crab’s soft abdomen.
Forced Use – Some crabs are forced into painted shells in pet stores, causing stress.
Turbo shells (favorite of most species)
Babylonia spirata shells
Murex shells (for larger crabs)
Nerite shells (for smaller crabs)
Tip: Provide a "shell shop" in your tank where extra shells are placed for easy access.
