The piece means a number of things to me...chiefly, I would say it is about fragile and toxic masculinity, relating specifically to my anecdotal experience of it distilled through the filtered lens of a first-generation, latinx, male-bodied person.
The notion of 'Herida" came to me one day -- I can't say exactly what I'd been looking at/listening to (perhaps a little bit of everything) -- but essentially there was this notion that, indeed, there seems, at least to me, an ineffectiveness in the way that we talk about problematic, maladaptive attitudes and behaviors exhibited by men, particularly those who typify themselves cis-gendered and hetero-normative.
Conversations had about fragile and toxic masculinity often veer towards creating an atmosphere of heated contention and even contempt, leading to communication breakdown.
So, it is the hope that this piece can ultimately serve as a potent means of facilitating discussions, with grace and compassion, about the many pitfalls and far-reaching consequences resulting from a culture stricken by widespread and unchecked fragile and toxic masculinity.
