I offer lessons at a flat monthly rate, with all books, fees, and related costs included. Payments are due on the first lesson of each month. A late fee will be applied to any payment not received by the 10th of the month.
Malia Henson is a pianist and singer from Double Springs, Alabama. She started taking piano lessons from her aunt, Bonnie Knight, when she was in the 2nd grade at Double Springs Elementary School. In college, she studied piano under Jane Hudson, Dr. John Stallsmith and Delores Howard. Her vocal studies were led by her mother, Regina Henderson and Dr. Rachel Mathes at UAB. She studied choral conducting with Dr. Philip Copeland and organ performance with Dr. John Stallsmith.
Malia has taught private piano and voice for over 30 years and has coached many young women entering pageants and competitions. During high school and college, she received awards in talent, interview and physical fitness through the Miss Alabama Scholarship Program. She has served as a guest clinician and vocal coach for choir retreats and as a worship leader for women's conferences and Kairos of Alabama. She sang with the ASO Chorus and UAB's Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Opera Workshop, Jazz Singers and played in the UAB jazz band on bass guitar. She has won numerous piano awards including superior ratings at the Alabama Federation Festivals, winner of the Elbert Lingo Keyboard Artists Competition, Teen Talent and Gold Medal recipient at the Birmingham-Southern Sonata Competition.
