Next website update scheduled for 1/17, and includes the new Fruits & Vegetables section along with updates to the entire Plant Selection section.
Composting is essentially nature’s recycling system! It takes kitchen scraps, dead plants, and other organic materials and breaks them down into rich soil you can reuse in your garden. This finished compost is full of nutrients and helpful microbes, acting like a superfood for your plants. Think of it as turning everyday items like banana peels and coffee grounds into a powerful fertilizer that improves moisture retention and supports strong plant growth.
This classic method involves using a container to hold your composting materials. Bins can be purchased or built from wood, wire, or other materials. Be sure to choose a location that gets both sun and shade and has good drainage.
Similar to bin composting, but without a container. Build a pile of alternating layers of "greens" (nitrogen-rich materials like food scraps) and "browns" (carbon-rich materials like leaves or wood chips). Keep the pile moist and aerate it occasionally by turning it with a shovel.
Dig a trench and bury your food scraps directly in the ground. This method is simple and requires no additional equipment, but it takes longer for the materials to decompose.
