Henry Hudson's Voyage

Elementary students in Hamagrael Elementary School have studied about famous explorers. They have decided to do a class project on Henry Hudson and his exploration that brought him to what is now known as the Hudson River in New York State. The Hudson River flows from New York Harbor north to the Adirondack Mountains.

Henry Hudson had four voyages/journeys during his career. He was looking for better trade routes. He was looking for a better northern route to Asia. One of the sailors named Robert Juet kept journals of their journeys. He made some unsuccessful attempts to find the Northwest Passage, and he tried again in 1609. He was a commander for the Dutch East India Company. He kept hitting ice on his journey, but instead of going back home, he decided to take his ship, the Halfmoon, west, looking for a western passage. He ended up sailing to North America. He went across what is known today as the Atlantic Ocean. He and his men explored New York Harbor, and then they sailed up what is known today as the Hudson River. The Hudson River goes up the east side of New York State. He sailed up to what is known today as Albany, New York. Albany is the capital of New York State.

The Hamagrael students and teachers wanted to celebrate the 400th anniversary of this journey because the Hudson River flows very near their town of Delmar, New York, and the school is just south of Albany, New York.
