Before research questions and designs can be evaluated, you must understand how they are created. Check out the resources below to get a better understanding of the structure of these research elements...
In this chart, I analyzed research questions from some of the secondary research articles I used in my literature review. This source was very helpful in identifying the strength of these published questions.
After looking over a few published articles, I went back to my personal research. Using the skills I had developed I analyzed my working questions...
In this chart I reviewed the same secondary research articles; however, this time I focused on the experimental design. This source helped identify elements of strong research design.
So, which had the clearer research design?
In my opinion, the second study had a clearer research design. This study gave specific demographic breakdowns of all participants, estimated how accurate the representation of the tested sample population might be for the overall population, and gave very specific explanations about what research instruments were used. In the first study, all the reader knows is that the participants were interviewed. The names and identification of participant’s is noted in the quoted responses; however, all 19 respondents were not noted by the end of the article. The reader is left to assume the validity of the people interviewed. The first article leaves room for the reader to question: what were the interview questions? How accurately do those 19 participants represent the LGBTQ community in Toronto, Canada-- how far can those results be generalized? And so forth. On the other hand, the second study, explicitly provides statistical significance of all results and limitations for generalizations. The inferences made about the results is supported with previous literature or further explained; no causation is identified.
This assignment broke down the structure of published studies, which provided inspiration for analyzing the strength of my own research question and design. While my working questions were strong, I did not end up using my second research question. The analysis of my questions is included in the chart.
Visual adjustments were made to made this wordy assignment to make it less of an eye sore. I broke up the chart with commentary, and turned the assignment into more of a thought process than simply a chart to look at. I also hyperlinked and cited the learning resources used in class. Some of the chart headings were shortened. The final column of the second chart was turned into a paragraph explanation.
