Maker's Space Class

My summer after freshman year I decided to sign up for the Maker's Space class at the Tech Shop in Arlington, VA. My group was tasked with inventing something that could be useful for others. The four of us designed a table for four people that could be adjusted based on how the person wanted to work. Our idea was that a group could still work together while each person was most comfortable at their spot. They could lift the desk if they wished to have a standing desk, they could tilt it like a drafting table, and they could pull it out without affecting the others at the table. During the six weeks, we brainstormed, designed, took classes, bought materials, and built the table!

This happened to be the place where my business partner, Annie Kelly, and I learned to make metal clay jewelry. At the end of the summer course, we had fallen into so much love with the technique that we decided to start our own business that summer, Katangense!

Classes we took:

  • Welding
  • Laser Cutting
  • Metal Clay
  • Metal Shop
  • Wood Shop
  • Rapid Prototyping (3D printing)
