The last set of videos showed asymmetrical attacks versus counterattacks. Today's videos are almost symmetrical. Ideally, priority should be judged without slow motion, as fencers should be able to recognize the ongoing threat. Those can we call simultaneous attacks - important - from this year for 0 points. Btw. simuls are quite rare.
Even in these, you can find subtle patterns that might be seen as a defender's role, but we won't enforce it to this extent for LS competitions. It is not easy to spot without slow motion or sport fencing background.
Q: I’m curious about this one. It looks like left has it (??) but there is no quality to the strike. It just is kind of placed there whereas the thrust from right is good. In Nordic we would give the point to right and discount left. How would you call it?
A/1: if it slips bellow the armpit - no valid. Yes. If it hit the jacket, bended, and then slips off - valid
A/2: (beside the quality, which is of course as above) when advancing, you have a potential advantage for starting the attack, since the opponent is reacting with the retreats and managing distance. so as a defender you need to do somethinbg to create/take a tempo, to be able to take over attack, or even make a simultaneous attack.
when a defender(retreat) is waiting for the advancing fencer to start attacking, so they can do a simul, or they wait to see that the progressing fencer takes another step, they will usually end up counterattacking. takinbg over is usually done with preparations / anticipation. this can be used as a clue to the referee, while you can also look for ither clues to see if you can call the attack for the advancing fencer, or did the retreated manage to solve it.
i agree in this vid, left starts the attack, but i would accept a simul as well in the current situation.
X: from my point of view (I do not know how I judged it in reality) but nowdays I would give point to right fencer because he started attack into preparation fase. in slowmo it is visible that thrust is already casted when leftfencer start preparation for cut which dislocated his point from opponent
Y: Can you clarify what you mean by attack on prep here? Does it mean left had not established priority?
K/1: i agree. but we would accept if someone calls a simul for it nowadays.
K/2: i think by attack in preparation, he means that Left is setting up actively, tries to pull Rights attack or counterattack, but makes some mistakes and right starts his attack at a moment when left is not ready.
left catches himself in tempo against a slow but experienced opponent, by the time he starts to attack.
we can say attack in prep, because the fact is that right attacked in the end, but we know that left also wanted to attack.
we explain this way, that in fact, left didnt manage to start the attack, so right's cut was not a counterattack.
in very clean terms, this is just attack right, if we are ready to call such differences. or simul, if someone is not -- this is within the tolerance at the moment.
