I've installed Helvetica Neue fonts on my Windows. The problem is when websites use Helvetica or Helvetica Neue typeface, they almost exclusively do it simply using "Helvetica" or "Helvetica Neue" font-family. But In my windows, the Helvetica fonts are installed as a "HelveticaNeueLT Com 45 Lt" or "Helvetica LT Std" or similar extended name. I've tried to create my test page, and the browser renders the font properly only if I use the full font name. I'd like to know, how to make windows/browser display Helvetica properly?

I've recently installed a helvetica font on my computer and ever since, Chrome has been trying to use it - on site like ebay, netflix, etc. I've checked the "customize fonts" option and Helvetica isn't seleceted anywhere in there. When I try to remove the font from Windows, it says it's "in use" and I can't remove it. I could try booting into safe mode to do it, but I would really prefer to keep the font (I'm using it to create a resume). How can I stop chrome from trying to use Helvetica?

By default, Kanboard uses the following order for loading fonts: font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; On Windows computers Helvetica Neue and Helvetica are not available wit...

lately I started experiencing a font-family-related issue. On certain websites the font-families/styles look broken. I tried troubleshooting the issue by myself without any luck. What I did so far was reset my Windows fonts to default, reinstall Firefox and look what font-families are loaded through the Inspect tool. If I opened the same web page in Chrome the font looks OK. Two websites the issue is most visible at - support.fiverr.com and gmail.com when someone replies to my e-mail.

You can check in the Rules tab in the right panel in the Inspector what font-family is used for selected text. You can check in the Fonts tab in the right panel in the Inspector what font is actually used because Firefox might be using a different font than specified by the website.

Gmail - the issue only occurs when someone replies to my e-mail or forwards me someone else's email. In the regular e-mails the used font-family is Arial, however in the 'replied to' or 'forwarded' e-mails it's obviously another font that doesn't show up correctly.

(Edit:) THERE, Standard, Serif, and San-Serif Brave Browser fonts are/were set to Verdana. (Since posting, some testing of Helvetica neue, to see if matching with the font-family reported by Developer Tools, significantly changes appearance.)

I found the solution and it is working perfectly, as I mentioned in a previous comment that the problem is in the font name that Manager reads out of your windows system which does not match what Manager needs, follow the below steps and it will hopefully solve the problem.

However, the font-family - Helvetica, Times (oh by the way I know Helvetica and Times are two separate fonts) do not work in Codepen.io. On my mac, with the Helvetica font the title looks so pretty. But, on codepen.io I had to change to Monospace and the Title looks so repugnant.

(Here is my code: )

Font family names other than generic families must either be given quoted as strings, or unquoted as a sequence of one or more identifiers. This means most punctuation characters and digits at the start of each token must be escaped in unquoted font family names.

After a long while, I tried to check my Rhino 6 for windows (so this probably doesnt belong into this thread) and I found there is the same issue with Helvetica fonts. Do you know, does the 6.19 SRC solve it for both platforms or just mac? Thank you

Monotype support person could not unfortunately provide much help. I think the single crucial question to ask them would be asking what is the exact family name of the font that is displayed when the font is selected on macOS. It must be something different than Helvetica Neue. E.g. Helvetica Neue Pro would suffice, or Heveltica Neue LT, or anything that helps them to become a family of their own.

OMG, it is unbelievable the Monotype/MyFonts.com customer support should give answers like this (and that the web site shows the full name as family name and the PostScript name as the full font name, as in the screenshot you provided). This is a single font name, while what you would need to know is the common family name that the fonts in this package have. It is hopefully something like Helvetica Neue Pro...

When I yesterday visited MyFonts.com and Linotype.com, I visited these same tech info pages which are fine as per font, but the actual family name is not shown anywhere (the name that is shown on the web site as the common name is not necessarily the same as the actual familyname used in fonts, so e.g. for these fonts the name shown on the web page is "Neue Helvetica" (followed by "Pro", "Paneuropean", "World", etc., while the actual familyname is reversed, e.g. for the "World" version it is "Helvetica Neue World". It would be important to anyone on macOS that the familyname is something else then "Helvetica Neue".

Full Font Name is exactly that - Full font name (Name ID 4)

Sometimes that is the same as PostScript Name (Name ID 6).

Sometimes it is not the same - like in your image above for Helvetica Neue World.

And you can see the correct Full Font Name for that font on MyFonts here:

MyFonts.com seems to state (according to the screenshot provided by OP) that the "Family Name" of "Neue Helvetica 55 Roman" (that is, a single font that belongs to the basic Pro value package of the referred font family) is "HelveticaNeueLT Pro 55 Roman". That certainly cannot be the family name in the sense of group name shown in the screenshot I made from FontLab.

Many old fonts on many font websites have only Font Family Name (ID 1).

There is no Typographic Family Name (ID 16) in the fonts.

In that case the application (APub, etc.) shows that (ID 1) in the font family list.

Many of the old Apple fonts (they still supply) only have Font Family Name (ID 1).

The users of those applications should understand all this.

I don't even understand how I have not been suffering from this (probably because I use Word and LibreOffice Writer just as tools for preparation of text for layout so the font used in context is typically Times New Roman, and that's as far as I am going with these apps). I am far from being a macOS fanboy, but this really, really sucks... So in practise there does not seem to be such concept as family name in non-DTP related Windows apps even such as Word or LibreOffice Writer (just a menu name and the old-school R/I/B/BI grouping). This of course has not been an issue in any graphic design related apps where developer has bothered to see the "extra trouble" of actually using the available API to provide this additional information. I have myself created font related Windows apps and I know that true typographic family names saved as part of font meta data can be read with in-built font APIs of Windows SDKs, starting from something like Windows 95. There can be no excuse for letting font listing stay this elementary in current Office apps. Microsoft, please consult your OpenType font development partner Adobe!

Thanks for reporting back -- it might help someone else who struggles with this same issue! The key thing is that the typographic family name is something else then plain Helvetica Neue so in this case "Helvetica Neue LT Pro". It is likely that it would have been "Helvetica Neue LT Std" in the standard package and that it is never just plain Helvetica Neue (causing conflict with intrinsic Apple package). It is odd that this information is not stated anywhere in the tech specs on none of the referred sites selling this font.

But you can get Helvetica Neue for web from Fonts.com for web use for a fair price too. I would probably use font-family:"Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Liberation Sans, Arial, sans-serif"; so those pcs with the font installed can see it, and those who don't have it can see a replacement. 0852c4b9a8
