hanage is a collective of three artists who typically work individually but have come together for collaborative projects. Since its formation in 2015, despite each artist working in different forms, they frequently met and exchanged ideas due to their proximity and shared environment, engaging in experimental activities. However, due to changes in life circumstances such as raising children, moving homes, and the impact of COVID-19, the artists now live in different cities—Aoki and Toda in Tokyo, and Akiyama in New York—and continue their work from a distance.
The work being created in Manila for this exhibition draws inspiration from René Magritte's famous phrase, "This is not a pipe," which questions the image and representation in art. The work reflects a rethinking of relationships, as symbolized by the commemorative photograph of the three artists, with the phrase "This is not a family" examining the nature of their connection. It is part of an ongoing series exploring these themes within the context of their relationship.
As part of the 98B “Growing Together” event, the exhibition on November 23 will feature a life-size commemorative photo of the three artists, with drawings sent by Aoki and Toda from Tokyo, which Akiyama, who traveled from New York to Manila, collaged and completed. The work evokes the image of a seed traveling across distances by mail or transport, arriving in a new land, and growing in a new environment.
The exhibition’s title and the theme of the drawings, "Microclimate", refers to the small-scale climate factors—such as temperature, radiation, humidity, and wind—that plants are exposed to in just a few square meters on the surface of Earth. It also serves as a metaphor for how we live in cities and are affected by and coexist with the small events that occur within our small societies and lives. As the artists come from different places, they cannot draw the same pictures or have the same thoughts when reflecting on things. This is the nature of their relationship as a species.
Finally, the completed work will be taken back to New York by Akiyama and exhibited in her own space, marking the completion of the project. The concept of the work embodies the idea of continual movement, much like the movement of a seed.

Microclimate -a part of Bear’s story-

Pencils, markers, fabric, paper, tape on sheets
by hanage (Shoko and Marico)
Several people with Shoko and Mariko drew on this sheet. Inspired by Shoko and her family’s direct sighting of a bear at a family campground in northern Japan during a summer vacation, We discussed what we would do if we encountered more than one animal or creature, and drew many animals and creatures ourselves.
We wanted to bring bears to Philipin, many of which are in Japan but none in the Philippines.
The Tarsier, a species unique to Philipin is depicted in the work.

Hanage's Oneday show Microclimate will be held at the Growing Together program of 98B, an alternative space in Manila.
