Helen began their Masters in Geological Sciences at the University of British Columbia in Fall of 2024. At UBC they have continued their education with coursework in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, and Hydrology and work as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant. Their thesis, supervised by Ali Ameli, focuses on developing novel statistical methods for inferring probabilistic and time-variant relationships between catchment states and surface water discharge.
From 2020-2024 Helen worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as an Environmental Data Science Research Assistant and Research Associate. During this time they worked on several different projects across the Earth and Environmental Sciences including:
i) The Watershed Function SFA: A multi-laboratory project focused on understanding the impacts of warming and drought on mountainous watersheds.
ii) iNAIADS: Early career research project focused on using data science and machine learning to better understand and predict changes in water quality across the continental US.
ii) Exasheds: Multi-laboratory project focused on developing methods for AI-assisted watershed modelling for data-intensive simulation.
As a member of the Environmental Data Science group supervised by Charuleka Varadjarajan, Helen developed a core capacity for developing production-quality repositories, using version control systems, maintaining package versions, data standardization, and more.
In the summer of 2019, Helen participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates Program through the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. They worked for three months at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies analyzing the modelled response to Pinatubo-sized volcanic eruptions with GISS Model E 2.1.
This research led to the collaboration with others as part of the Volcanic Model Inter-comparison Project, and to their first publication looking at how initial ENSO and NAO conditions impact the modelled response to Pinatubo-sized eruptions.
From 2017-2020 Helen worked as an outdoor trip leader, rental gear attendant, and manager as part of the Tulane Outdoor Adventures program. They led single and multi-day hiking, backpacking and paddleboarding trips across the Gulf South. Their love for the outdoors and ourdoor pursuits have continued as they moved West to Colorado and then to British Columbia.
In their free time Helen enjoys spending time connected to the outdoors rock climbing and snowboarding. They also love to cook and garden with their friends and community.
