Observational Still Life Lesson
Observational Still Life Lesson
Demonstrations and Assignments
This demo was part of a larger lesson where students are drawing a still life from observation using graphite. We have practiced using our viewfinders and creating a dynamic composition. We have done many smaller sketches over several weeks preparing for a final still life. The students have started laying out their shapes on their final paper and they are beginning to add layers of value. This demo is to instruct the students on how to use two different kinds of erasers; a kneaded eraser and a rubber eraser, in order to define the objects on the still life using value instead of just line. Each day we have a warm-up drawing that takes about 5 minutes at the beginning of class and the students complete those in a grid on a page and their sketchbook (divided into six one for each day of the week and one square for a weekend drawing). The previous day we shaded the whole square using a 2B pencil in preparation for the demo in this video. For this demo I had the document camera hooked up to the smart board. To begin, on the smart board was an image of a cube in light and shadow and then I went on to demonstrate how to draw it and how to use each kind of eraser. I wanted to also review some of the steps that we went through and are still life and review some of the vocabulary words that we've been using for our still life.Â
