On February 24, 2021, our Heights students had the opportunity to have special guest speakers inspire them to create goals for themselves! Our speakers' stories were all about PERSEVERANCE and how important that is, especially when working towards a goal.
We had 5 speakers join and share their academic and career journey! Our students were able to enjoy the dynamic presentations and be inquisitive with our guest speakers.
Due to a time limit on the day of the event, we wanted to be able to provide an opportunity for all of our students to hear ALL the presentations on their own time! Please enjoy the speaker profile and presentations!
A special thank you to all of the speakers who gave their time and effort to inspire our Heights Bears!
Mr. Demnlus Johnson III is a Council Member in Richmond. The City Council oversees the city's staff, makes sure the city has money, and provides residents' services (i.e., safety, library, and parks). He chose this career in public service because he enjoys helping people. His professional goal is to make sure the city delivers all of its services equitably. Mr. Johnson moved to Pittsburg in middle school, attended Central Jr. High, and graduated from Pittsburg High school. When he was in school, he struggled with math. However, through perseverance and asking for help from his teachers and sister, his math skills improved. Black institutions such as church, schools, community, and family have shaped who he is today.
Ms. Jacinda Wollenweber is a UCLA Alumni, and she is currently a dental assistant. Ms. Wollenweber intends to become a Nurse Practitioner. She was inspired to pursue this career because of her desire to help others, as well as knowing how crucial it is to have more black women in this particular field. Ms. Wollenweber grew up in Pittsburg in a single-parent household. She is thankful to have had a supportive mother who was able to guide her in the right direction and encourage her to pursue her dreams despite the challenge of her father not being around. One cultural expectation that helped form who she is, was the experience of going to college. This allowed her to set goals for herself and accomplish them in order to gain a higher education.
Dr. Kamaal Jones is a doctor at Stanford Children's Hospital Pediatrics, and is in his final year of residency training in pediatrics. He chose to become a pediatrician because he loves working with children and being able to impact them at a crucial time in their lives. In particular, he has a passion for children who have been affected by the criminal justice system, including the millions of children who have incarcerated parents. This work is really rewarding, and he feels very fortunate to be able to bring together his passions in such a unique and impactful way. He was a great student in college but getting into medical school was really challenging. He applied to 16 programs, and was denied by 13, and waitlisted by 3. However, he didn't let this stop him, and worked really hard to get off the waitlist and got into medical school.
Ms. Ebony Creswell is a Ph.D. candidate in Anthropology at Pennsylvania State University. She grew up in the US and Switzerland. Growing up, she didn't know much about her dad and her family's health history. This made her realize the importance of health history, and how humans adapt to health issues is vital for treating diseases. Currently, she studies human behaviors and how our environments help us affect our health. Ms. Creswell grew up in Contra Costa and went to LMC to get her EMT certification. Ms. Creswell believes it's important to her to do what makes her happy. Having goals are great, but we should change as we learn and grow more about the world. Ms. Creswell has struggled with family issues and her ADHD. Schools were difficult for her, but through hard work, perseverance, and a good education, she is now in the #1 Anthropology department and one of the country's best schools.
