I am Heerak Sharma, a math undergrad at IISER Pune. I have varied interests most of them are mathematics or philosophy to the first order. I love to explore the intricacies in math and physics, therefore I am majoring in math and minoring in physics. In my free time, I mess around with computers, play tennis and read a bit about human nature.
My core principles:
1) There is no upper bound for human potential. One can and should always strive to improve their craft.
2) Originality doesn't come without clarity. Thus, I really emphasise on getting the basics clear and then build on top of them.
3) You can easily see through calm water. One should always try to be calm and collected and face everything with an open mind.
Some extracurricular experience:
I was the vice president of the robotics club of my high school. I regularly was involved in working with teams and making various basic robots like wall detectors. More recently, I was the coordinator of the Maths Club of IISER Pune. I have experience in organising talks, conferences and expository events with the aim of making mathematics popular and allowing people to see its beauty and elegance.
A bit of my background:
Since my childhood I have been messing around with electronics. In my free time I liked opening toys and sometimes household items and try to fix them. If I failed in fixing them, I took out their components and used them to make something else later. Eventually this became into a hobby and I started working with basic mechanics kits which were available at that time. I got into the robotics club at my high school where I learned a bit of Lego Mindstorms kits, Arduino and started learning basic electronics. Unfortunately, this stopped after a couple of years because I changed schools. I got into gaming through the amazing game Minecraft. The game provides you a great deal of flexibility: you can decide how everything looks like (every block in the game can be customised) and you can make anything (you could in theory make a computer in Minecraft and run Minecraft on it). further, you could mod the game removing any remaining limits. I then moved onto more mainstream games like PUBG, CSGO, etc. They have always left me fascinated with how these games work.
In India, to get into college, you unfortunately or fortunately have to clear very competitive exams. And I did just that but compromised on every single of my hobby. While I was preparing for these exams, I started liking mathematics and physics; mathematics because of the beauty it is and there is a certain joy in making things rigorous, physics because it excited me and I felt I was good with it. Thinking about fundamental question in physics feels good. Hence, I finished BSMS Dual Degree from IISER Pune majoring in mathematics with a minor in physics.
