The Singular Mind of Terry Tao, by Gareth Cook
Have you heard of the story of young Terence Tao crying in the middle of the quantum physics final? This article discusses Tao's personal life and the difficulties he had while studying mathematics like all other mathematicians. It taught me that great figures are not always like what we may imagine.
A Path Less Taken to the Peak of the Math World, by Kevin Hartnett
This is an article about June Huh, who once wanted to become a poet, then a science journalist, and then solved a long-standing conjecture in mathematics. I found this story beautiful, and it has shaped my idea of mathematical study/research into a somewhat different form. Here is a paragraph in which he recalls the algebraic geometry course taught by Hironaka Heisuke.
“The math students dropped out because they could not understand anything. Of course, I didn’t understand anything either, but non-math students have a different standard of what it means to understand something,” Huh said.
