How do I know it's time?
Either you've been to your local veterinarian and your pet has a "poop" prognosis, or you've seen "signs" of a downward trajectory. It's not always easy to determine the quality of life, but we can try to help you with that. There are many signs to look for: loss of appetite, not drinking water, weight loss, crying or moaning a lot, difficulty getting up, hiding, excessive lethargy, disorientation, incontinence, breathing issues, excessive vomiting and diarrhea, and so on.
How long should I wait to make the call?
If you need guidance, you could talk with your vet and see what your options are. If not, you can consult our doctor by phone. Either way, don't wait too long, as your pet may be suffering which can last for days. While it may be "easier" decision-wise if your pet passes on their own, we certainly don't want them to linger in discomfort and pain.
What is the process?
Once the doctor is in your home, you will find a comfortable place for your pet and put down a blanket or towel. A pre-anesthetic injection will be given. This will relax your pet, so they don't experience any anxiety or pain. Once they're very sleepy, which may take several minutes, we will administer the final injection (which takes only a minute or two more). We can then create a clay paw for you to remember your beloved pet.
What is the cremation process?
We will place an ID tag on your pet and take them with us. A service van from the cemetery will pick them up; ashes are generally returned within two weeks if private cremation is chosen. For group cremations, the ashes will be spread at the cemetery.
Can I bury my pet?
It depends where, so please check your town or city ordinances. There are also pet cemeteries in the tri-state area.
Should I give a tranquilizer to my pet before the house call?
If you know your dog or cat is aggressive, and especially if you've given them tranquilizers in the past, this would be a good idea so the process can proceed smoothly. Usually, we advise giving them two hours prior to the visit.
Should my children be around?
Depending on their age, especially for younger children, it may be advisable to let them "say good-bye" before we arrive. This is a personal decision, but it can be traumatic and difficult for certain children to witness. Better to remember their beloved pet in life.
