HOW TO APPLY
APPLICATION DEADLINE
20 July, 2025
Heat Futures at 78°E brings together a multidisciplinary cohort of artists, designers, social entrepreneurs, researchers, and community leaders based in Colombo and Bengaluru. This is not a residency or a training programme. It is a shared space of inquiry and co-creation.
Each city will host a two-day in-person gathering, bringing together its local cohort to explore and respond to the lived realities of urban heat, through conversation, futuring, memory, design and making. These gatherings will be grounded in the textures of place: streets, shade, dissonance, and adaptation.
Alongside these, a series of virtual sessions will connect both cities, creating space for cross-border learning and collaborative futures work.
Work with others across disciplines to trace how heat is distributed, governed, and experienced
Engage in speculative exercises, systems mapping, and regenerative design to surface possibilities for structural change
Examine how cultural practices such as rituals, routines and relationships can act as climate infrastructure
Co-develop early-stage ideas, prototypes, and frameworks that feed into your work and wider ecosystems of practice
Contribute to a shared microsite and resource library that can support continuity, visibility, and future collaborations across the region.
We’re inviting those who are curious about systems, committed to place, and willing to work across differences. Whether you come from the arts, architecture, organising, or applied research, you’ll be joining others asking hard questions and building new capacities, together.
Heat Futures at 78°E is for those who care about how we live, adapt, and respond to a warming world, especially in cities like Bengaluru and Colombo, where climate and inequality collide in everyday ways.
You might be an artist or designer, a researcher or urban planner, a climate activist, a storyteller, a community organiser, an architect, a scientist, or someone working across these fields in ways that don’t fit neatly into one box.
Whether you work independently or as part of an organisation, if you're curious about collaboration, systems thinking, and future-making, you're welcome here.
To take part, you should:
Be based in Bengaluru, India or Colombo, Sri Lanka, or be able to travel on your own to one of these cities for a two-day, in-person gathering
Be available to join virtual sessions that connect both cities
We’re looking for people who bring lived experience, local knowledge, and a willingness to think across disciplines. If this resonates, we’d love for you to join us.
Here’s what the journey will look like if you’re selected to join Heat Futures at 78°E. The process is spread over four months, combining online and in-person sessions designed to build trust, exchange ideas, and create something meaningful together.
Applications Open: 20th June 2025
Application Deadline: 20th July 2025, 23:59 IST
Announcing Selected Participants: 15th August
Session 1: Online: Wednesday, 3rd September at 4 pm IST

In Bengaluru: 19th & 20th September, 2025
In Colombo: 31st October & 1st November, 2025
Session 3: Online: Wednesday, 26th November, 2025
Applications will be accepted through an online form, which includes a few short sections to help us understand who you are, what you care about, and why you’d like to be part of Heat Futures at 78°E. You’ll also be asked to submit a short video (1–2 minutes) sharing your motivation for joining the programme. This doesn’t need to be polished. We're not looking for high production quality, just a clear, heartfelt response that helps us understand your perspective.
You’re also welcome to submit your application in any language. However, please note that the main sessions of the program will be held in English. While your fluency doesn’t need to be perfect, a basic comfort with spoken English will help you participate more fully. We’re a small team and, at this point, we’re unable to offer support in multiple languages — but we hope to grow more accessible over time.
We understand that not everyone prefers to express themselves in writing. If it’s easier for you, you’re welcome to record a video instead — simply respond to the application questions in your own words, in a way that feels most comfortable to you. If you’d prefer to submit your application this way, just get in touch with us. All formats will be received with equal care and consideration.
