Kim is an Anishinaabe artist, originally from Winnipeg Manitoba, currently residing in Toronto Ontario. Her heritage is Ojibway/Metis on her maternal side and Icelandic settler on her paternal side. She is a proud First Nations member of Brokenhead Ojibway Nation on Treaty One Territory.
Kim graduated from the University of Manitoba Bachelor of Arts Degree program, choosing to major in Native Studies in an effort to understand the systemic structures of colonization that so deeply impacted her family. She then studied Media Production at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon Manitoba.
A video post production professional with over 25 years experience working in the Canadian broadcast industry, Kim recently expanded her voice as a storyteller and filmmaker. In 2020, Kim participated in the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity Indigenous Storytellers and Spoken Word Artist Residency. It was during this time she began exploring the story of her maternal grandmother Flora Bear, through her mom's audio recorded memories.
In 2022, this work was developed into Kim's first short documentary film called 'Kokum, with love.' which pays honour to her kokum Flora, whom Kim never knew except by her mom's memories. The film was developed as part of the NSI-Canada IndigiDocs program and was produced with assistance from the HotDocs CrossCurrents Canada Doc Fund. Additional artist funding support is gratefully acknowledged from the Indigenous Screen Office (ISO).
'Kokum, with love.' screened at 9 Film Festivals locally and internationally combined and won the audience choice award at The Gimli International Film Festival Premiere. The film is currently available streaming on CBC Gem & APTN Lumi.
Kim is a proud mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, friend. She is a beadwork artist, a lifelong learner and a spiritual seeker who is passionate about art, new media, Indigenous storytelling and family histories.
Kim is currently working towards her MA in Indigenous Studies at McMaster University as well as working with artists, writers, producers and storytellers who are following their heart's path to tell their stories.
