What is Causing this Sudden Spike in Pneumonia Cases?
Recent reports have shown that there has been a rise in Pneumonia cases, primarily among children, across Northern Virginia. According to the Virginia Department of Health, the number of weekly diagnosed pneumonia cases has tripled in the past two years. As these patients are being treated, the question still remains: what is causing this sudden spike in Pneumonia cases? In an interview with WHSV, Lisa Sollot states that the spread of Pneumonia across children is due to their presence in public spaces like school or daycare. Due to the fact that Pneumonia is an airborne respiratory disease, it is easily spread through droplets in the air and on surfaces.
It can be assumed that the rapid increase in Pneumonia cases in Northern Virginia is due to the high amount of public interaction, specifically among children. The Virginia Department of Health suggests that to avoid catching Pneumonia, the public should participate in the following: staying home when sick and avoiding those who are sick, washing hands often with soap and water, avoiding touching one’s face, and practicing good health habits.
