Public transportation contributes to a healthier environment by improving air quality and reducing oil consumption, and through better land-use policies. It also helps to expand business development and work opportunities. And, it is critical for emergency situations requiring safe and efficient evacuation.
The City of Plainfield in collaboration with the Healthy Plainfield Coalition, and The Rutgers Travel Program created a resource map with transportation routes, key contacts, mobile apps, and other public transportation resources. On Wednesday, May 19, 2019 at the Plainfield City Plaza, a Transportation Fair was held. The event was a fun and informative event that showcased affordable transportation resources, demonstrations, and enrollment opportunities. Healthy Plainfield Coalition Representatives from different organizations, such as the City’s Division of Parks and Recreation, the Health Department, Plainfield Action Services, Neighborhood Health Services Corporation, and Hackensack Meridian Health, provided information about their services.
In addition, event participants received a free transportation booklet - a resource guide that outlines the various commuting options, key points of interest, and mobile applications that can assist with travel planning. This transportation booklet was developed in collaboration with the Rutgers New Jersey Travel Independence Program, the Healthy Plainfield Coalition and the City of Plainfield.
The Plainfield Transportation Fair was a collaborative effort through the partnership of United Way of Greater Union County, Lifelong Plainfield, The City of Plainfield, The Grotta Fund, the Healthy Plainfield Coalition, and the New Jersey Travel Independence Program.
NJTIP in collaboration with the Plainfield Public Library hosted the Connect to Transit for Professional Event on September 24, 2019 at the Plainfield Public LIbrary. The Plainfield Tower West and Iris House: New Jersey participated in this training and gained transportation information and resources that can be easily shared with clients..
A couple of days later on September 27, 2019 at the Plainfield Senior Center, the Healthy Plainfield Coalition and its partners hosted an educational session where seniors gained knowledge to have a better access to Transportation resources allowing greater mobility and independence. They also learned how to plan transit trips to access their favorite places without a car and pay the fare.
During these Transportation events, Free Booklets and a Transportation Map with all transit routes in the City of Plainfield were distributed to all attendees.
The New Jersey Transportation Independence Program (NJTIP) and the Neighborhood Health Center, Healthy Plainfield Coalition Partners, are collaborating to bring the Connect to Transit for Healthcare Professionals and Volunteers Event in Plainfield. This is a free professional development session for healthcare professionals, volunteers and others who want help older adults connect to transportation options. This event will be held on March 16, 2020 from 11 AM - 1:30 PM at 1700 Myrtle Ave. Plainfield, NJ.
