Promotores are local Spanish-speaking residents who serve as liaisons between their community resources and families through neighborhood and school outreach strategies and education programs. The Promotores conduct community-building classes in the community on important topics, including mental health support (Es Dificil Ser Mujer), breast cancer prevention, and poisoning prevention. The Promotores also assist families in enrolling in health insurance, CalFresh, and utility assistance and invite families to be civically engaged and participate in various community forums.
The Healthy Chula Vista Initiative provides residents with tools to lead a healthier lifestyle. The City, in partnership with a variety of agencies throughout the community, responds to identified barriers to healthy living options in the City and collaborates on events and efforts to promote health and well-being in the community. The City will make efforts in six focus areas, including Land Use, Healthy Food Access, and Physical Activity, to support strategies in the Healthy Chula Vista Action Plan.
The ¡Más Fresco! More Fresh Nutrition Incentive Program rewards CalFresh recipients for purchasing fruits and vegetables with their CalFresh benefits at participating Northgate Gonzalez Markets by providing financial incentives that can be used to purchase additional fruits and vegetables. This program makes it easier and more affordable to purchase and consume plenty of fruits and vegetables for better health.
The San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative is a public-private partnership with the mission of reducing and preventing childhood obesity through policy, systems, and environmental change. The COI is facilitated by UC San Diego Center for Community Health and funded by the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA). Established in 2006, the COI engages a diverse group of regional stakeholders with committed public leadership from the County Board of Supervisors and program-level involvement of HHSA staff. The Childhood Obesity Action Plan (COAP) is the guiding document for COI activities, and also serves to guide the broader community in working to reduce and prevent childhood obesity in San Diego County by creating environments and policies that support healthy eating and active living.
