PROGRAM

Health Horizons is committed to developing the next generation of health advocates. To this purpose, we deliver internship and volunteer programs to students in high schools, colleges, and medical institutions. We seek to make the partnership advantageous to both parties: to assist our interns and volunteers in their goals and to achieve our mission of improving community well-being through the development of health literacy.

VOLUNTEER ROLES

Creative Content Writer

Write engaging and informative blog posts on topics like health and environmental issues. As a Creative Content Writer, you have full creative freedom to explore and write about any health or medicine-related topic that interests you, from fun facts and press releases to articles connecting health to other subtopics. You’ll craft articles that are both fun to read and educational, transforming complex issues into accessible and captivating content. For example, you might write about how environmental pollutants affect marginalized communities or explore the connection between access to clean water and equitable health outcomes. We’re looking for creative writers with strong research skills and a passion for impactful storytelling. Your work will need to be reviewed and approved by our team before publication and each article written is equivalent to 1.5 volunteer hours. This role is completely virtual.

Sanitary Supply Ambassador

Want to do something crafty while still making a great impact? As a Sanitary Supply Ambassador, you’ll purchase pads, tampons, other menstrual products, or hand sanitizer (Dollar Tree is a great place!) and organize them into bins. Along with the items, you'll print our logo and add a brief message on the back, highlighting our mission and encouraging people to enjoy these free products. Place the bins in local workplaces or bathrooms that could benefit from them (with permission), and snap a picture to document your work. Each bin is equivalent to 2.5 hours but can vary depending on size used and money spent.

Virtual Nursing Card Creator

Bring a smile to someone’s day by becoming a Virtual Nursing Card Creator! Using Canva or Slides, you’ll design friendly and heartfelt e-cards to be sent to residents in nursing homes. Each card should be nice, inclusive, and free from personal details or inappropriate content. Your creations will need to be approved before they’re sent out, and you'll earn one hour of volunteer time for every 4 approved cards.

INTERNSHIP ROLES

Editorial Intern

Sharpen your writing and editing skills, and get ready to collaborate with a dynamic team. As an Editorial Intern, you’ll be involved in various aspects of content production, from researching and writing articles to editing and proofreading. As an Editorial Intern, you'll dive into various career pathways, crafting insightful articles that guide readers through different healthcare professions. You will also interact with readers by addressing questions in the comments section of articles, offering educated responses and nurturing a community of learning and support.

Marketing & Social Media Intern

As a Marketing & Social Media Intern, you will play a crucial role in expanding our reach and impact by promoting our articles and campaigns through social media. Your responsibilities will include creating and executing marketing strategies across various platforms to enhance engagement. Oversee and update our social media profiles, respond to comments, interact with followers, assist in creating compelling content, and implement marketing strategies to build a vibrant online community on various platforms. You'll also reach out to organizations and potential partners to foster collaborations and enhance our network. This involves finding and reaching out to health-related professionals, former college admission officers, and graduate students that are willing to answer questions that support our organization’s initiatives and help students gain valuable experience and knowledge. Interns must know how to use Canva, have experience with building partnerships, be remotely available, and have a time commitment of approximately 5 hours per week.

Support + Empowerment Intern

As a Support & Empowerment Intern, you'll lead both 1:1 and group support sessions, focusing on mental health and creating a safe, welcoming space for individuals seeking personal and professional growth. You’ll provide guidance and encouragement, helping participants navigate their challenges, achieve their goals, and feel secure. Conducting at least 2 support sessions weekly is required, though the number may vary based on demand. It’s essential to be respectful and open-minded, handle interactions thoughtfully and report any concerning behavior to us calmly. This role is ideal for those passionate about supporting and empowering others through direct help and mentorship, with excellent communication skills.
