Normally, people release gas via the sphincter. However, for those with ostomies, that really won’t work, since the stoma doesn’t have one. Releasing gas at strange times can cause embarrassment, anxiety, and fear, and it can cause avoidance of social functions.
We produce gas due to bowel movements. Usually, this is the passing of excessive gas that’s caused by fullness and bloating. This is one of the main complaints of patients, since it’s a bit different than most. A lot of people who have ostomies too also had issues with flatulence, in the form of irritable bowel syndrome.
It is a natural part of digestion, where the gas builds up and causes pressure. Ostomy patients feel different when they pass gas. A lot of times, ostomy patients feel fear, since it can make a loud, almost embarrassing result. The problem, however, is that this is beyond your control usually, minus a few nutrition tactics. We’ll discuss how to fix those in the next section
Passing gas in those with ostomies is a bit different, since there are a few different causes. Usually, it’s because of cold abdominal temperament, especially where the stomach is, which produces more harmful gas. If a person with an ostomy overeats, then they might experience this too, since this is more than the usual amount of food. Finally, the type of food is another cause too, since foods high in acids can produce gases which are dense, due to the high levels of water content.
Swallowing when chewing and eating can also cause this, especially if the foods and drinks make you bloated. We all swallow air when we eat, but drinking carbonated beverages, poorly fitted dentures, and even nasal drip can cause flatulence when you ingest certain foods if you’re lactose intolerant as well, this will also cause issues with the body, and flatulence is one of them.
So how do you combat this? There are a few ways to do so. For starters, chew your food thoroughly, so that they’re soaked with saliva to break it down. Food should only be eaten when you feel hungry too and stop eating when you’re full.
When you eat food, do it calmly and slowly.
You should try to take your time with food, and don’t drink liquids while eating foods, since that contributes to the fullness. If you have beverages, veggies, or fruits, consume these about an hour or so after the main meal. Finally, look at the foods that you eat. If you’re eating lots of fatty foods, those which are spicy and sour, or are fried and processed, you’re going to experience this. Turnips, onions, peaches, plums, and even squash and oranges are also supposed to be avoided.
A diet such as this really just involves limiting the foods that you eat and eating more of the foods that are good for you. Try to avoid acidic foods as much as you can.
Another option is of course, stiflers. These are foam products that attach to your stoma cup. It will suppress the noise from this, and it will adapt to hold the stool consistency. You can do this freely in public, and it also offers a protection towards your soma due to the shape of the cup.
So, what do you do about movements? The best way to do it is to learn and figure out which ways to reduce it. You’ll never make it fully go away, but reducing it is incredibly beneficial.
