The Health Science career cluster represents one of the largest industries in the country, with more than 11 million jobs available. The health science industry includes establishments ranging from small-town private practice physicians who employ only one medical assistant to busy inner city hospitals that provide thousands of diverse jobs. More than half of all non-hospital health service establishments employ fewer than five workers. On the other hand, almost two-thirds of hospital employees were in establishments with more than 1,000 workers.

Providing adequate and beneficial healthcare to the growing and aging population is one of the most pressing problems of the twenty-first century. But this problem is solvable, especially as more and more individuals enroll and pursue an education in health science.

Students can start learning and pursuing their interests in health science as early as middle school. Then continue that pursuit throughout high school, career and technical centers (CTC), and in post-secondary institutions.

However, health science in postsecondary institutions is where students learn about the aforementioned research-based career courses, application-based career courses, and take advanced health science courses.

Postsecondary health science education is much more complex and expansive than it is in middle school, high school, or CTCs. This is because students have the opportunity to continue their education to earn advanced degrees, including doctorates. Not to mention, postsecondary institutions are also where students learn more about the research elements of health science, in addition to the previously learned process-oriented rudiments. With this knowledge, students continue on to learn about specialized medical professions like oncology, radiology, pediatrics, and more.

They will gain knowledge and experience that protects and promotes public health through healthy promotion, health education, and disease prevention programs and activities. Students in this career track aim to reduce disease, promote healthy behaviors, encourage the use of available healthcare services, and reduce healthcare cost.

Students in the exercise and fitness concentration of Health Sciences will be prepared to understand principles involved in exercise science and general fitness. By the end of their college career, students will understand the basics of kinesiology, body mechanics, exercise physiology, nutrition, and overall fitness.

Students enrolled in the Health Sciences nutrition concentration learn to understand and communicate evidence-based principles of nutrition science. They learn about metabolism and the role of nutrition in health as well as the knowledge to identify and guide others toward healthy dietary and life-style choices.

Program graduates will often work in healthcare settings at the entry level or seek additional education in a healthcare or related profession as these areas are among the fastest growing in the overall economy.

The mission of the Health Science major is to provide the highest quality undergraduate education that integrates the principles of scholarship, ethics, cultural competency, communication skills, critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and civic orientation to meet the diverse regional needs of the evolving health care industry.

This A.S. degree offers great flexibility and engaging elective course work as you explore health care or are gearing up to apply to one of our eight health science programs. We offer the most diverse range of programs and even have an interprofessional state-of-the-art Health Science Simulation Center.

Positions in the health sciences range from clinical work with frequent patient contact to office work at private corporations. Because healthcare is such a diverse field, health sciences graduates have the ability to move both laterally and upward as career interests and goals change.

According to 2022 data from the Association of American Medical Colleges, a specialized health sciences degree was one of the seven most common types of undergraduate degrees earned before starting medical school. (Additional coursework may be required for admission to graduate or professional programs).

Employment in the healthcare sector has been growing steadily for years, even during the most recent recession. This upward trend in employment is set to continue over the next decade. The American population is getting older, living longer, and seeking out more treatment for chronic conditions.

Healthcare administrators are already scrambling to fill jobs across a wide range of positions. In light of this high demand, credentialed healthcare professionals will be especially well-positioned for career advancement.

The B.S. in Health Science degree program provides students with the opportunity to pursue a pre-professional education that prepares them for careers in medicine, nursing, biomedical research, or healthcare management.

This course provides a description of the various health care professions including educational and licensing requirements. The concepts of professionalism, health care teams, and current health care policies will be covered. Students will increase their knowledge of the various health care professions through job shadowing.

In this course, major pathophysiologic concepts are explored using a body systems approach relating them to the practice of the health care professional. Theories relating etiology, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations are used to study common disease processes. The course introduces students to medical terminology, and describes the impact of cellular dysfunction, interpretation of medical laboratory tests and drug interaction and pharmacology for the health care provider. The course encourages critical analysis of clinical data to identify logical connections and integration. Prerequisites: BIO205, BIO206 or by permission

This course covers research concepts in the healthcare and fitness industry including the logic of experimental and correlational designs, issues of control, sampling, measurement of variables, ethical issues in research, use of online professional search procedures, and writing in APA style. Students engage in various aspects of the research process culminating in a research paper on a discipline specific topic. Prerequisite: MATH 208

This course focuses on evaluating and implementing healthy lifestyles and human behavior for longevity of lifespan from adolescence through adult development. Focus will be placed upon cultivating a holistic approach to health and wellness that is rooted within strategies for implementing healthy lifestyle changes, as well as "living through prevention": a description relating to methods of preventing long term disease and disability.

The curriculum is designed to prepare individuals who seek specialized education in health services administration. The flexibility of the distance-learning program offers baccalaureate degree graduates the opportunity to acquire expertise and specialization in line with their interest, needs and career applications in health services administration.

Students learn practical managerial and organizational knowledge and skills to address financial and economic issues, balance human resources needs, utilize the health information data and technology, and streamline the health care delivery process and system to improve its quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness. The curriculum will prepare students to become health care leaders in a variety of leadership and administrative roles within the diverse and dynamic health delivery system.

The program embraces different backgrounds and interests and is appropriate for individuals who wish to gain further interdisciplinary education in health services administration. All of the courses necessary to complete this program are available by web-based distance learning.

The curriculum is developed by collaborating efforts between the Marieb College of Health & Human Services and the Lutgert College of Business. By working with leading health care organizations in the region, the curriculum is continuously updated to meet the fast-changing needs and innovative opportunities of the health care field.

The Health Science Bachelor of Science degree provides working professionals with the opportunity to advance their careers and is ideal for undergraduate students pursuing health science-related careers.

You must have an associate degree or certificate in a health-related program. Students who have earned an associate degree are typically able to enroll in this course of study with no additional prerequisite requirements.

The program is designed for working allied healthcare professionals. Depending on previous coursework, the core BSHS curriculum is designed to be completed in two years as a full-time student or three years as a part-time student. Each student is advised and provided a personal Eagle Flight Plan for completing their BSHS in a timely manner.
