The Health in Your Hands Team is excited to use the Foldscope, an ultra-low-cost origami microscope, to aid in the diagnosis of schistosomiasis. Endemic to much of sub-Saharan Africa where access to healthcare can be limited, diagnosis of schistosomiasis is a pressing challenge. Left untreated, the infection raises one's risk of bladder and cervical cancer, among many other complications. With backgrounds in medicine, engineering, global health, and media, the HIYH team is backed by industry, scientific, and on-the-ground support.
