Health and Physical Education Club unites students interested in teaching health and physical education and expands their knowledge. Through this organization, members will be able to share teaching strategies and ideas, access professional resources, attend professional conferences, and support peers within the department. The club is open to all students.

This club is open to all Bridgewater College students with an interest in the field of education. Through Educators Rising Collegiate, future educators are able to gain access to an additional level of supports and content to ensure they are ready for the classroom. Throughout the year club members participate in a variety of activities designed to engage them in deeper discussions around hot-button topics in education, spur them to think about actions they can take at the local level, and prepare them for a classroom of their own.

Well-designed and effective school health and physical education programs, allow students to acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to make health-promoting decisions. Comprehensive school health education should address the National Health Education Standards and include curricula for students in pre-Kindergarden through grade 12 that incorporate a variety of topics such as the ones listed below:

Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT) - The HECAT can help school districts, schools, and others conduct a clear, complete, and consistent analysis of health education curricula. It reflects current research in health education and uses science to improve health education practices.

The Department of Health and Senior Services is pleased to be able to offer new oral health educational video (English-only) presentations designed specifically for Kindergarten through High School Seniors. The Spanish language PowerPoint presentations have not been narrated at this time, but are still good educational resources. The videos and PowerPoints can be downloaded free-of-charge by clicking on the grade(s) specific icons. The presentations can be used by school nurses, teachers, as well as other health care/child care professionals in conjunction with health curriculum.

Physical education is a school-based instructional opportunity that provides students with a planned, sequential, K-12 standards-based program of curricula designed to develop motor skills, knowledge and behaviors for active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy and emotional intelligence. The outcome of a quality physical education program is a physically literate individual who has the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthy physical activity.

Opportunities to accumulate physical activity during the school day include time spent in physical education class, classroom-based movement, recess, walking or biking to school, and recreational sport and play that occurs before, during, and after school.


The I Can Do IT! (ICDI) Program is offered through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (Administration for Community Living) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education. ICDI is a voluntary school-based physical activity program designed to provide access to, facilitate and encourage opportunities for students with disabilities to be physically active for 60 minutes a day. Students can accumulate the 60 minutes through physical education, adapted physical education, recess, classroom physical activity breaks, active transport to/from school, and extracurricular activities, including a variety of club and sport activities to accomplish this goal.

I Can Do It! (ICDI) is a customizable and inclusive health promotion model aimed at transforming the lives of individuals with a disability. ICDI is centered on mentor-mentee relationships and weekly health-related goals. The ICDI Mentors and Mentees (participants with a disability ages five and over) meet weekly over 8 weeks to engage in physical activity, learn and practice healthy eating behaviors, and set health-related goals. DESE and the CDC are working together to provide educators and advocates in Missouri amazing professional development opportunities revolving around the current educational climate. The series will feature two outstanding Missouri educators and advocates, Tari Garner and Sean Nevills, as they lead discussions to address individual situations surrounding the many challenges and opportunities for growth COVID-19 brings to health and physical education. These professional development opportunities will be presentations with opportunity for participant questions and discussion.

Health and physical education is a major that prepares you to teach school-aged populations the skills and strategies that support and improve their health and well-being. Emphasis is given to increasing your foundational knowledge and ability to apply teaching practices grounded in health behavior change, movement concepts and sport. The health and physical education program at UNH offers its undergraduate students a way to gain knowledge and teaching skills for developing quality programs in both health education and physical education that will make a difference in the lives of all school age children and youth.

The health and physical education (HPE) major provides a foundation for teaching through a four-year program (BS), or the UNH Department of Education fifth-year program leading to a masters of arts in teaching (MAT). Graduates become certified to teach kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) health and physical education in the state of New Hampshire. This licensure is transferable to all other states in the U.S. Extensive supervised practicum experiences that provide teaching skills, including adaptive physical education programming, offers an excellent foundation for preparing high-quality teachers. The combination of health with physical education and adaptive physical education makes graduates highly marketable.

Culminating Experience

 The coursework for students choosing the four-year or five-year path to teaching certification is exactly the same until the final semester of the undergraduate program. The culminating experience for students in the four-year teaching program is student teaching (EDUC 694D /HPE 694). Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 to be eligible to student teach. Students choosing the fifth-year program complete a year-long internship, in lieu of student teaching. Students also have the option of completing a concentration in adapted physical education through additional coursework designed to enhance teaching strategies and the programmatic needs of students with disabilities.

Physical Education Core Content

Successful completion of a total of 30 semester hours of physical education content course work, as follows: (15 credits of this content is satisfied in the MS degree program requirements, listed below.)

"The old model of health and physical education is geared around sports and games, and answering the question: 'What are we going to do today?,'" said Randy Nichols, SRU professor of physical and health education. "The new model is about 'What are we going to learn today?,' and the learning is centered around self-care and well-being. The new model is much more individually based with personalized learning, whereas the old model was about groups and teams playing a sport. The goal is to give students the confidence and skills to take care of themselves and to be engaged in their well-being."

The Pennsylvania Department of Education describes health and physical education as providing "students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to achieve and maintain a physically active and healthful life, not only during their time in school but for a lifetime."

There are similarities between the two concepts. The new model emphasizes "well-being," which refers to the holistic dimensions of an individual's life that is well-lived, and "wellness," which broadly describes a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity is just one of many elements of a wellness education.

"There's a difference between being a wellness educator and a gym teacher, and we need so much more wellness education in schools today instead of having kids playing dodgeball, matball or whatever occupies class time," Nichols said. "We need to teach them how to eat better or how to control their stress and anxiety -- those are all part of wellness education."

The SWE graduate program is offered completely online and is geared toward providing practicing teachers and administrators strategies for transitioning from a traditional health and physical education model to a school wellness education model. It's also ideal for teachers needing Level II certification, which requires educators in Pennsylvania who have been teaching for six years to obtain 24 post-baccalaureate credits.

Also, the wellness education model and the focus on the whole-child approach to health and physical education align with current initiatives from the Society of Health and Physical Educators, known as SHAPE America, and the Centers for Disease and Prevention. 17dc91bb1f
