Medical research has shown that a significant number of near-death experiencers (NDErs) display a number of psychic abilities upon their return. In his groundbreaking 1998 book Lessons From the Light, the celebrated pioneer NDE researcher Dr. Kenneth Ring claimed that “there seems to be little doubt that there is a strong connection between having had an NDE and the development of healing gifts afterward.”
During the early years of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), Ring had the chance to study hundreds of near-death cases that appeared to involve "paranormal elements", including clairvoyance, telepathy, precognition, and what is popularly known as the "healing touch". Regarding this, he admitted in Heading Toward Omega (1984):
“As my interviews continued, I could not help noticing the frequency with which psychic events were spontaneously reported by NDErs and how often these experiences were said to have occurred following the NDE.”
In the same book, Ring also mentioned that after their otherworldly experiences many NDErs take up counseling or do healing work and that certain experiencers “are convinced that the energy they have come to feel they are channeling is a healing energy (...) some of these same NDErs have become healers since their NDE, while others have said they believe they now have the capacity to heal others.”
