For running, the Cane Creek Compression Ring Forty is my top headset spacers for running choice because its split design offers unmatched adjustability without compromising steerer tube integrity. The runner-up, Lowrider Bike Headset Bearing, earns a spot for riders needing heavy-duty replacement bearings rather than simple height adjustment components.
• Cane Creek Compression Ring Forty — best for precision tuning on high-end bikes; pick this if you need a machined ring that expands to fit your specific bearing OD without cracking the steerer.
• Lowrider Bike Headset Bearing — best for restoring old cruiser or lowrider frames; pick this if your bike has worn-out 1-inch bearings and you need a direct replacement pair rather than a spacer.
• GooDay 12 — best for building a custom stack from scratch; pick this if you want a large variety of thicknesses in one kit to dial in your handlebar height perfectly.
• Farbetter 2 — best for weight-conscious riders seeking durability; pick this if you prefer carbon fiber construction for its stiffness and resistance to corrosion over aluminum.
• Free-fly Bike Stem Headset — best for completing a rebuild or replacing a lost cap; pick this if you are missing the top cap and expander plug needed to preload your headset properly.
• GANOPPER 1 — best for an all-in-one upgrade kit; pick this if you need spacers, a top cap, star nut, and bolt included together for a complete installation.
• BQPOLING 1-1/8 — best for rugged, heavy-duty applications; pick this if you require a full sealed headset assembly with oversized bearings for rough terrain riding.
This isn't a traditional block of plastic or aluminum you just slide onto your stem. It is a precision-machined compression ring designed to sit between the upper bearing and the top cap. This flexibility means you aren't locked into a single tolerance; you can get a tight, wobble-free fit even if your fork or headset dimensions vary slightly.
I recommend this component when you are building a high-performance setup where every millimeter of steerer length matters. Because it is made from aluminum alloy and machined to precise tolerances, it adds negligible weight while providing a solid foundation for your stem. The anodized finish ensures it won't corrode or fade, keeping your cockpit looking clean after years of sweat and rain.
The trade-off is that this is a specialized part. If you don't have a tapered fork requiring a 40-series headset, this might not be the right tool for the job. It is not a universal spacer for every bike out there, but for those who do need it, it solves a problem that generic blocks simply cannot address. You get a level of engineering that feels like it belongs on a premium race machine.
Sometimes the issue isn't how tall your bars are set, but whether they turn smoothly at all. This product is a set of two headset bearings designed specifically for 1-inch threaded headsets, common on classic cruisers, beach bikes, and lowriders. With 5/32-inch ball bearings and 16 balls per side, these are built to handle the torque and movement of a bicycle that sees heavy use or unique steering angles.

If you own a vintage-style bike or a custom build that uses older standards, this is likely what you need to get back on the road. It replaces the internal moving parts that cause grinding or looseness. Unlike spacers that just change geometry, these restore the mechanical function of the steering assembly itself. They are essential for anyone trying to keep an older frame rolling without modernizing the entire front end.
The limitation here is specificity. These bearings only fit 1-inch systems. If you have a modern mountain bike or road bike with a 1-1/8 inch or tapered steerer, these will not work. However, for their intended niche, they offer a robust solution. You aren't buying a cosmetic add-on; you are buying the core mechanism that allows you to turn the wheel safely.
When you need total control over your stack height, a single piece often isn't enough. Made from aluminum alloy, each piece is designed to stack seamlessly, allowing you to build a custom tower that fits your body and riding style exactly.
This is the go-to choice for cyclists who are still finding their perfect riding position. Whether you want your bars lower for an aggressive race stance or higher for a relaxed upright posture, having a wide range of small increments lets you make micro-adjustments. The black anodized finish matches most modern stems and forks, so the look remains cohesive. It is a practical investment for anyone who wants to fine-tune their fit without buying multiple separate boxes.
The main consideration is organization. While having many pieces gives you freedom, it also means you have more small parts to manage during installation. You must ensure you place them in the correct order to avoid cross-threading or misalignment. But once installed, the result is a handlebar setup that feels tailored to you, offering a level of customization that pre-packaged sets rarely provide.
For riders who prioritize stiffness and weight savings, carbon fiber stands apart from aluminum. The material choice makes them lighter and harder than standard metal alternatives, while also being heat-resistant and impact-resistant. They are designed to withstand the rigors of off-road trails without flexing under pressure.
I suggest this option if you are upgrading a performance bike and want to shed grams from the front end. Carbon fiber also handles moisture and road salt better than some metals, reducing the risk of corrosion over time. The smooth edges and automatic cutting process mean they stack cleanly without catching on cables or creating noise. It is a sleek, high-tech solution for those who care about the feel and responsiveness of their steering.
The trade-off lies in cost and compatibility. Carbon fiber is generally more expensive than aluminum, and the aesthetic might not suit a budget build. Additionally, while the inner diameter is standard, you must verify that the outer diameter fits your specific headset system before purchasing. If you find the perfect match, though, you get a component that feels incredibly rigid and durable.
Precision is the name of the game with this seven-piece set. This variety allows for extremely granular adjustments to your handlebar height. The aluminum alloy construction is lightweight and features a colorfast anodized black surface that resists scratches and corrosion.
You should pick this if you are a detail-oriented rider who needs to hit a specific measurement. The set also includes a top cap, which is a nice bonus for ensuring everything is tightened down securely. It is a complete toolkit for setting up your cockpit correctly.
The primary downside is that it is a larger kit than some might need. If you only need to add a little height, carrying around a whole box of spacers might be overkill. However, for the price and the versatility offered, it provides excellent value. The diamond blade machine cut ensures a perfect fit on almost any 1-1/8 inch stem, making installation straightforward and secure.
Not every modification requires adding height; sometimes you just need to finish the job. This product is a top cap and expander plug combo designed to replace conventional star nuts and caps. It is made from aluminum alloy and works with both 1-inch and 1.25-inch forks. The package includes the cap, a steel stem bolt, and the expander plug, giving you everything needed to preload the headset bearings properly.
This is essential for anyone rebuilding a bike or replacing a damaged top cap. Without a proper top cap, you cannot tighten the stem bolts to the correct tension, which leads to loose steering and potential damage to the fork. The reusable nature of this part means it will last through multiple builds or repairs. It is a critical, functional component that ensures safety and reliability.
The limitation is that it does not adjust height on its own. It is a finishing piece, not a spacer for changing bar position. You still need separate spacers if you want to raise or lower your bars. However, for completing a headset assembly, it is a reliable choice. The simple installation process means you can get your bike ready to ride in minutes with just a hex wrench.
Sometimes you need a comprehensive solution that covers every base. This eight-piece kit includes five aluminum spacers in varying sizes, a top cap cover, a star nut, and a stem bolt. All components are made from aluminum alloy and stainless steel, ensuring strength and resistance to deformation. The blue anodized finish adds a pop of color to your build while protecting against the elements.
I recommend this for riders who are doing a full front-end upgrade and want to save time by getting everything in one box. The inclusion of the star nut and bolt means you don't have to hunt for compatible fasteners separately. The precision cutting ensures a snug fit, and the materials are strong enough to handle the pressure of tightening the stem. It is a hassle-free way to update your bike's steering geometry.
The only drawback is that the color scheme is specific. If you prefer a matte black or silver look to match other components, the blue finish might stand out too much. Additionally, the kit is heavier than carbon options due to the aluminum construction. Still, for functionality and completeness, it offers a solid value proposition for anyone starting from scratch.
This is a heavy-duty headset assembly designed for serious riding conditions. It features forged machined steel cups and oversized 1/4-inch bearings, built to handle significant stress without failing.
Choose this if you need a complete replacement for a worn-out or broken headset rather than just a spacer. The sealed design promises smooth operation and durability, resisting dirt and debris that can grind down cheaper units. The oversized bearings provide extra stability, which is crucial when tackling rough trails or jumping. It is a component built for longevity and performance under pressure.
The trade-off is size and weight. This is a substantial piece of hardware compared to simple spacers, and it may not fit bikes with different headtube dimensions. It is also more complex to install, requiring careful alignment of the cups and bearings. However, for those who demand a high-strength interface for their steering, this assembly delivers the reliability needed for tough rides.

No, spacers only change handlebar height. A loose feel usually indicates worn bearings or a lack of preload, which requires tightening the top cap or replacing the headset bearings entirely.
Carbon fiber is lighter and stiffer, which improves handling response, but aluminum is generally more affordable and equally durable for most street and trail riding.
Most spacers slide onto the steerer tube by hand. However, you will need a hex wrench or Allen key to tighten the stem bolts and top cap to the correct torque settings.
Spacers are safe as long as they are the correct diameter for your steerer tube and stem. Always ensure you leave enough steerer tube length above the stem for the top cap to compress the bearings properly.
