Integrated Flood Water Management through rejuvenation of tanks and ponds in Vizianagaram Town.
Sponsored by DST-WTI. Cost: 91.91 lakhs (DST share) + 16.8 lakhs( Department of Water Resources, Govt of AP) ( Jun 2018- Dec 2021)
In this project, we proposed and implemented strategic plans for integrated water management through rejuvenating the ponds and also adopting natural methods for waste water treatment. This project consist of two components: i) Flood water management and ii) Improving the quality of waste water which is being used for irrigation.
For the first component, the team has done a detailed analysis on geomorphological characteristics, rainfall analysis and developed two dimensional flood inundation model. Based on the results, the team has identified the flood hotspots and to reduce the flood during monsoon, we have constructed (rejuvenated) a pond in a location which is suitable for flood harvesting. This implementation has reduced the flood volumes and also improved the ground water levels.
In the second component of the project, to improve the water quality of domestic waste water which is used for irrigation, the team has constructed a series of natural treatment systems based on waste stabilization ponds. The development of this project has improved the overall water quality of irrigation water for an area of 200 acres.
