HB MUN TRAINING
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A: Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations’ world diplomacy where delegates attempt to solve and discuss real-world problems through the power of their assigned country. Throughout the conference, a delegate will become more aware of the global significance of the issues they are discussing and how they can aid it through the power of their country. To become a successful delegate in your committee, one must aim to excel in all the stages taken before and during the conference.
A: Each competition we go to is called a “conference.” In each conference, there are smaller groups of students who belong to “committees”. The committee refers to what the overarching theme of your debate will be for the day. Everyone belongs to one committee and each committee will debate two topics. For example, if my committee is Arab League I know all of the nations in my committee will be Arab countries and I know our debate will be focused on Arab issues. On average, a committee will have between 10 and 30 students. Students who attend these conferences and participate in committees are referred to as delegates.
** The conference we are attending is called SSUNS (Secondary School's United Nations Symposium) and there are 6 committees in which we can participate in.
A: In your committee, you are debating on behalf of another nation. This means when you attend the conference you are going to represent the foreign policies and ideals of the nation that you have been assigned. Your country assignment determines the stance you will take on the topics discussed during the debate. The topics of debate typically reference social issues that concern the nations in your committee.
** The SSUNS Team will assign you a country once they have placed you in a committee out of your preferred top 3. You will receive this information once our school has registered for the conference.
A: Before you debate, you will be conducting extensive research about your committee, the two topics, key stakeholders in the issues and what stance your country has on the issue. The research portion of your committee is done at your own time because what you require to be successful is unique to each country. Our team will always be here to help. All this research will go into a binder which you will be allowed to use during the conference. Each delegate will also work on a position paper which will be handed in to make you eligible for awards. The position paper is a document that indicates your country’s stance on the issues.
A: The debate is what happens during the conference, where countries discuss the issues assigned and communicate with each other. Delegates will speak for short periods of time one by one raising their placards.
A: After debate, a solution for each of the topics needs to be produced and agreed upon by the majority of the committee. This solution is known as the resolution. Resolutions are curated in a collaborative process where countries with a similar stance get together and come up with recommendations that they would like to see enforced to solve the problem. It is only once a resolution is passed that the committee can move on to a different topic. All eligible delegates vote on resolutions.
