History by Design: NYC Edition is a New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) program for grades 3-8 teachers and their students who are interested in using project based learning to take a deeper look at the intersection of social studies, history, and the arts. This program presents an opportunity to bring experiential learning into the classroom while exploring multiple perspectives and encouraging student voice. Students investigate New York City history by studying a lesser-known New Yorker and their surrounding historical context then creating an exhibit of their learning. Chosen individuals are selected from the Hidden Voices resource which was produced in partnership by the NYC DOE Social Studies Department and the Museum of the City of New York. Hidden Voices features the stories of 16 lesser-known New Yorkers whose stories have been unheralded, unrecorded, or forgotten over time. Students gain experience working as a group on a long-term project designed to make social studies, the arts, and history come to life and relevant to their daily lives.
This year, participating classes had the opportunity to present their work over Zoom to a live audience of other participating classes between June 9-18, 2021. This website memorializes all of the wonderful exhibits completed this year. Click on a name of a "Hidden Voice" at the top of this page to view student exhibits based on that person's life.
