Nelson Mandela memorized and recited "Invictus" during his years of imprisonment on Robben Island. After his release from prison and upon becoming president, he used the South African rugby team- the Springboks- to inspire the country. The film "Invictus" tells the story of his relationship with Sprinboks captain, Francios Pienaar.
"This is no time for boasts or glowing prophecies, but there is this: A year ago our position looked forlorn, and well nigh desperate to all eyes but our own. To-day we may say aloud before an awe-struck world: "We are still masters of our fate. We are still captain of our souls."
Winston Churchill, 1941
On a trip to the Warrior Games in the USA in 2013, HRH The Duke of Sussex (Prince Harry) saw first-hand how the power of sport can help physically, psychologically, and socially, those suffering from injuries and illness. He was inspired by his visit and the Invictus Games were born.
