My name is Alyssa Hay Li Ching. I am a third and fourth-generation Chinese American, born and raised in Maui, Hawaii. On the small island I call home, I am always looking for new opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills in everything I can. From a young age, I have learned to love the creativity and expression of art, ranging from pencil drawings to (now) ceramics. At Baldwin High School, I take pride in my education, which has put me on the Principal's List and further fuels my drive toward my goal of a higher level of education on the US mainland. I began Hay Li Ceramics for a project in high school in 2024, but it's driven me toward new passions. I enjoy getting to know people through conversations, and this business has expanded that pathway for me. As an artist, I love taking commissions and suggestions to produce enjoyable outcomes for others beyond myself.
LOGO DESIGN
Both my first and last names are fairly common, so for my business name, I looked to none other than my middle name. I wanted a heading that closely resonates with me to then represent my art.
When first sketching out designs for my logo, I used the Chinese characters for their unique aesthetic. However, it felt unbalanced and messy. To get the feeling I was searching for, I used a brush on paper and just began messing with the letters. The logo I digitalized is a combination of 4 different sketches.
The overall color of my logo was a simple decision. Just like my name, it relates to my culture. Red is a lucky color in China because it is associated with life-generating energy as well as joy and happiness.
My logo's overall shape and font were determined to complement and balance the appearance. The square and printed font structure the organic brush strokes.
