I am passionate about getting students interested and involved in the study of language, languages, discourse and interaction. To date, I have tutored 2 Applied Linguistics subjects and 3 Chinese language subjects at multiple institutions. I believe in an open approach to teaching, encouraging student feedback, dialogue about teaching materials and methods, and a bit of fun. At the same time, I design my classes to closely reflect the overall learning objectives of each course, ensuring each student acquires the knowledge and skills the courses are designed to deliver.
I am qualified to teach beginners to advanced Mandarin Chinese, but specialise in teaching beginners. I have tutored 3 courses at 3 different institutions, and design lectures, activities and assessments to foster students' procedural knowledge of Mandarin Chinese (ie ability to use Chinese in real life).
I have taught the following courses (in reverse chronological order):
Chinese Mandarin 101: Intensive (Beginners), Feb - Apr 2021, The University of Sydney, Centre for Continuing Education
Introductory Chinese A for Non-Background Students (ARTS1450), Feb - May 2020, UNSW Sydney
Modern Chinese 2: Spoken (CHIN2022), Jul - Nov 2019, The Australian National University
As an applied conversation analyst, I specialise in teaching courses at the intersection of language, interaction, society and identity. I aim to foster students' knowledge and curiosity of the vast applications of language and society studies, both from theoretical and applied perspectives.Â
