When you go to research top vacation destinations, more often than not you will find that Hawaii is in the top ten of the list. Its beauty, foods, values and culture are something one just can’t ignore when they visit the island. As someone that has grown up on the islands and lived there pretty much my whole life, I do agree that my idea of family and values is different from others that are not from Hawaii. However, more often than not, Pacific Islander kids do not take the leap in college or in life to live in the mainland for about a year. Whether it is homesickness, fear of change, fear of weather, fear of culture shock, or many other reasons, it stops Pacific Islanders from being able to experience the world and what it has to offer. Having been in the mainland has taught me incredible amounts about how the cultures are different and how they are similar along with the pros and cons of each one. Being in the mainland has shown me how interested people on the mainland are in the culture of Hawaii but tend to repel Pasifika kids because of assumptions and the stubbornness of Pasifika kids. Using this paper will allow for people of the mainland to get a good idea of the lifestyle and values of Hawaii to allow them to understand and connect with islanders, while Islanders can also in turn understand the culture of the mainland to connect and be at ease to come to the mainland to see the world of opportunities that await.
