Bob King is President of Pacific Biodiesel, the renewable energy company he founded on Maui in 1995. Created as a solution to alleviate the disposal of waste cooking oil at the Central Maui landfill, Pacific Biodiesel is the nation’s longest operating biodiesel producer, and established the first retail biodiesel pump in America. Today with nearly 100 employees statewide, the company is the only commercial producer of liquid biofuels in Hawaii. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Pacific Biodiesel recycles waste cooking oils from restaurants statewide for use in the production of clean biodiesel. The company's refinery on Hawaii Island utilizes state-of-the art distillation technology to annually produce 5.5 million gallons of biodiesel, sold entirely in Hawaii – creating jobs, benefitting the local economy and helping to support energy security in the state. Pacific Biodiesel has always focused on recycling with a zero-waste philosophy that incorporates development of value-added co-products – and its collaborative, community-based “agriculture and energy” production model demonstrates a full-circle system of sustainability and climate change solutions designed to help Hawaii achieve a clean energy future. Today King is spearheading many agriculture-related projects demonstrating that sustainable, community-based farming for food and fuel expands the ways Hawaii can meet its renewable energy goals. These projects include farming biofuel crops such as sunflowers on 115 acres in Maui’s central valley, evaluating agriculture crops as a potential year-round feedstock for producing biodiesel along with the production of value-added food and cosmetic products, and exploring innovative ways to turn agriculture waste into useful products that can create new revenue streams for farmers.
With more than 30 years of brand strategy and marketing experience, Joy Galatro spearheads marketing, PR and product sales initiatives for Pacific Biodiesel and its sister company, Maiden Hawaii Naturals, LLC – both companies founded by renewable energy pioneers, Bob and Kelly King. Founded nearly five years ago, Maiden Hawaii Naturals sustainably farms sunflowers and industrial hemp on Maui and produces culinary oils, natural cosmetic ingredients and clean beauty products. Joy develops compelling storytelling strategies – including farm tours and community outreach programs – that connect a variety of audiences with the "full circle sustainability" focus of these companies that demonstrate a system of renewable fuel, recycling, clean energy, local farming, local food production and greater sustainability in Hawaii.
