Hauntology is a strikingly original feature film from writer and director Parker Brennon. Inspired by a long love of horror films and atmospheric stories, Brennon presents an original take on the classic American horror story, exploring the themes of isolation, alienation, and terror experienced by the LGBTQI+, BIPOC, and feminine communities.
Drawing on their own experiences, Brennon presents an anthology of horror stories cleverly woven together in the film’s unique fabric of characters, music, images, and queer perspectives to create a narrative not previously offered in the horror genre.
With an ensemble cast featuring Samantha Robinson (The Love Witch, Cam), and Naomi Grossman (American Horror Story, 1BR), Jaidyn Triplett (iCarly), Hauntology also features the long-awaited return of horror icon Nancy Loomis (Halloween, The Fog) to film. We are excited to present Hauntology to audiences worldwide.
Hauntology was released in the United States and Canada on September 17th, 2024 and is currently available to Rent or Buy on Prime Video, AppleTV, iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft Video & TV, and other select streaming on demand VOD services.
"I grew up watching films like Carnival of Souls and Let's Scare Jessica to Death, so atmospheric stories surrounding women inspire my work. I also tell stories about isolation and queerness, drawing from my own experiences.
Hauntology is a story about isolation, queerness, and being an outsider. I wanted to explore sorrows and joys and of being queer, with an ending that feels good.
In past horror films, the few queer characters we met were at best destined to suicide or murder, and very often subject to villainization via negative stereotypes. Hauntology is unique because everyone in this story is queer. There's no single character who stands in for the whole community. The story doesn't shy away from death either, but rather leaves us hopeful for the future."
Hauntology is a truly unique combination of horror homage, ominous history, social allegory, and the nightmare-inducing atmospheres of art-house phycological thrillers. An anthology of four stories wrapped together inside a queer road trip, Hauntology retells LGBTQI+ and BIPOC ordeals and experiences as ghost stories. An older sister, Jazmin, takes her fearless younger sibling Venus on a tour of haunted places in their hometown, threading together their stories and revealing a sinister presence that threatens them both. Hauntology’s segments revisit a range of horror styles from atmospheric horror to classic Giallo films, while exploring the experience of “the outsider,” and how the entanglements of history, fear, isolation, and exploitation inform the queer experience. It’s about the burdens both born and shunned by family, and the generational trauma that persists until we stand against it.
Hauntology is a feature length anthology with all segments written and directed by Parker Brennon.
Hauntology’s segments each visit a different horror sub-genre including supernatural monster, Giallo slasher, ghostly possession, and atmospheric horror, while also featuring stories in winter, summer, spring, and fall.
Hauntology marks the return of early John Carpenter collaborator and original “scream queen” Nancy (Kyes) Loomis after a 40-year absence from feature films.
Hauntology employed authentic trans performers (Zoey Luna and Rosemary “Ace” Rosas) to play Julian Cashel in the segment “Witchcraft Becomes Her”.
Hauntology is an independent film completed on a budget of $600,000 (US) from privately raised equity financing.
