AMERICAN SOUTHWEST
Expedition Leadership
2027 Applications Open March 1
Expedition Leadership
Various Locations / American Southwest
In this course, students will immerse themselves in the American Southwest, exploring diverse landscapes that change annually. From desert canyons to mountain peaks, desert rivers to vast wilderness areas, these demanding environments offer unique classrooms for those seeking to hone their leadership, decision-making, and communication skills in challenging backcountry settings.
Targeted primarily at Outdoor Leadership students, but open to all, this course provides a rigorous exploration of advanced leadership skills essential for managing groups in high-risk outdoor environments. Students will initially engage with these skills in a classroom setting and then apply their knowledge during hands-on expeditions over spring break. The experiential component varies annually, focusing on skills such as mountaineering, snow camping, kayaking, or backpacking through rugged terrain, with navigation in complex landscapes and learning environment-specific considerations for camping and travel in remote settings.
By the end of the course, students will have gained invaluable experience in group leadership, wilderness navigation, risk management, and technical outdoor skills, all while deepening their understanding of what it takes to lead in demanding natural environments. This course is not just an academic endeavor but a true test of leadership and adaptability in the face of dynamic outdoor conditions.
