Hatyai Sitaram temple was previously known as “Somdet Thammapalaram Monastery”, which is often referred by locals to simply as “Somdet temple”. Originally, the temple located at 865 Moo 1, Sanambin Road, Kuan Lang Subdistrict, Hatyai District, Songkhla. The temple is about 5 kilometers from the town and covers an area of approximately 11.2 rai (about 4.4 acres).
The temple began construction in late 1976 by a group of male and female lay devotees who studied Abhidhamma (Buddhist higher teachings) and practiced Vipassana meditation under the guidance of Phra Khru Thammaban (Senior Monk). They were inspired by faith and unity to establish a place for studying and spreading Buddhism. The temple was initially named “Abhidhammapalanyan Buddhist Center.”
In 1983, Somdet Phra Phutthachan (Aaj Asabhamahathera), the former abbot of Mahathat Yuwaratrangsarit temple in Bangkok, along with the lay devotees involved in the temple's founding, assigned Dr. Anan Boonsopon to proceed with the formal establishment of the temple. Later then the name was changed to “Somdet Thammapalaram temple.”
In 1992, Phra Maha Somphot Kiccasro, a highly accomplished monk who completed advanced Pali studies at Tha Ma-O temple in Lampang Province, took up residence with 24 other monks and novices. During this time, the temple began offering Pali-focused monastic education.
On December 15, 1995, the temple was officially recognized as a Buddhist temple under the name “Hatyai Sitaram Temple,” with Phra Maha Somphot Kiccasro appointed as the abbot.
On May 30, 2002, the temple received Visungamasima status, a royal decree signifying full legal and recognition as a complete Buddhist temple in Thailand.
