I’m Hasika Wickrama Senevirathne, a dedicated researcher and educator in the fields of statistics, mathematics, and data science. Currently, I serve as a Biostatistician at the Singapore Eye Research Institute in the Singapore National Eye Centre. Previously, I was a Research Fellow at the Department of Statistics and Data Science at the National University of Singapore.
My research focuses on advanced statistical methodologies for clustered data, causal inference, graphical modeling, biostatistics, machine learning, and Data Science.
I hold a Ph.D. in Computational and Applied Mathematics (with a concentration in Statistics) from Old Dominion University, USA. This builds on my M.S. in Statistics from Sam Houston State University and a B.Sc. in Mathematical Finance from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. My academic journey reflects a strong interdisciplinary foundation combining mathematics, finance, and statistical theory with a passion for real-world applications and collaborative research.
My current research interests include biostatistics with machine learning and data science, causal functional connectivity in neuroscience and the development of innovative statistical learning methods for clustered and high-dimensional data. I’m especially interested in how data science can help uncover hidden structures and insights in complex systems ranging from public health to environmental studies.
In addition to research, I find great fulfillment in teaching and mentoring. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring courses in pure, applied, and financial mathematics; statistics; and actuarial science, both in Sri Lanka and the United States. I am committed to making statistical thinking accessible, engaging, and impactful for a wide range of learners.
I also actively keep pace with the fast evolving fields of artificial intelligence and data science. I regularly take part in online courses, seminars, and workshops on topics such as machine learning, deep learning, and causal discovery. Through platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and academic reading groups, I ensure that my knowledge remains timely and relevant enriching both my research work and the learning experience I offer my students.
When I'm not immersed in academic work, I enjoy exploring new ideas, supporting fellow researchers, reading philosophy, writing poetry, and spending meaningful time with my family.
