What is a breed standard?
Dogs differ in appearance, temperament, character, and performance.
A breed standard describes the ideal appearance of a dog. It also specifies the required appearance and temperament. The breed standard also defines faults. Some faults influence the judging of the dogs, while others lead directly to disqualification. Faults can include, for example, incorrect color, an incorrect bite, aggression, size, or body proportions.
At dog shows, dogs are judged according to the breed standard. Some breeds must pass a specific evaluation before they can be used for breeding.
The FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) sets the breed standards.
